Students of Bournemouth University were tonight left shaken after the lower roof of their student accommodation collapsed.
The incident happened at around 11pm and was caused by high wind speeds that are currently sweeping across Britain.
The car park roof of Lyme Regis, one of the students halls only recently built by Bournemouth University, collapsed onto cars and bikes parked underneath. Nobody was injured.
Andrew Fox of the Dorset Fire Service believes however that nobody is at further risk: "The car park roof is just a fire-protected barrier between the cars and the first floor of the building. All the floors above it are solid concrete, so they are not going to come down. Fire authorities expect further damage as the weather continues to deteriorate: "We've taken extra precautions. We're prepared for it, it is just standard English weather". The incident has caused panic amongst students.
One tourism student gave their first hand account: "The panels along the car park roof have been blown down and made fibre glass and other debris crash down. It's still coming down now. I'm surprised they haven't evacuated students in that block. In my opinion I think that it was built in a hurry and there are a lot of faults".
