Bournemouth University boasts over 60 clubs and societies, covering a wide range of interests. The Wire has a look at what some of them have been up to.

A member of the Athletics Society, Michelle Pank, has won a silver medal in the Dorset Cross Country Championships and will go on to compete in the Nationals in February. The society is also preparing to enter the British University Indoor Championships in March.

Teams from the Sailing Club are working hard in preparation for two BUAC races this term, one of which will involve racing five-man yachts.

During November the Rock and Metal Appreciation Society (BURMAS) helped run a Battle of the Bands at Dylan’s Bar. The winner was Nonpology, who were given a session at a professional recording studio as first prize.  The club is hoping to organise more events such as this one, as well as trips to gigs.

Members of the Parkour Club have continued to impress the public during their outdoor training sessions. The sport, not to be confused with free-running, is the art of using the abilities of the human body to overcome obstacles, for example by vaulting or leaping.

Well known for their spectacular performances at We Are Your Friends, the Juggle Society will be taking over Bournemouth Pier as part of the Comedy Circus, in February.

The FloorballClub, winners of the South West League and Society of the Year Award 2008, now have two teams which will be entering leagues and cups competitively throughout the year.

BU’s Performing Arts Society (PARTS) took to the stage with Guys and Dolls during February, in collaboration with the Arts Institute.

Cast member Guillaume Borkhataria said, “It’s going really well - we got more people than expected. The cast was on good form and we had a great time.”

The Five-Headed Maroon Dragons Drawing and Arts Society have been working in conjunction with artist Alan Mercel-Sanca .

“We are currently covering architecture, which is the challenge of seeing angles and perspective,” said Jessica Dowdall, club president, “we are all improving, and even my fantasy art has improved greatly.”

The Sub-Aqua club are set to spend a week diving in Scotland later this year, as well as trips out to Weymouth and Kimmeridge. The club meets every week at the Dolphin pool in Poole and welcomes members of all levels.

The Duke of Edinburgh club recently completed their first week-end training expedition on Dartmoor, and are looking forward to their second, which will take place in the Welsh mountains in April.

“We will have to be self sufficient in carrying out tents, clothes and food for the three days,” said Society President Sophie Haskins, “whereas on Dartmoor we had the 'comfort' of a village hall.”

The BU Ultimate Frisbee team has competed at Frostbite – an aptly-named beach tournament held in January.

“We did better than expected with freezing feet,” said club president, Sam Phillips, “finishing one place up from the position we started!”
